Student Writing Support Specialist - College of Online Education

Summary

Assists faculty and students in improving the quality of student writing through the implementation of writing support initiatives

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Facilitates the development of student writing skills through a variety of mediums (e.g. phone, email, web conferencing, or in-person) by providing instruction on how to complete writing and research assignments and by  promoting academic integrity
  • Creates, implements and maintains various support resources, services and workshops that teach effective writing and research practices, and that establish and support writing standards and consistency
  • Collaborates with faculty and online instructional designers on the development and evaluation of writing assignments
  • Maintains student records per department guidelines
  • Develops and facilitates professional development workshops and resources for faculty
  • Collaborates with the instructional design team and makes recommendations for changes or enhancements to online courses based on challenges identified when working with students
  • Collaborates and coordinates with online academic advisors and online admissions associates on how to advise students of available writing services and refer them to these services, as necessary
  • Promotes student writing support services to online faculty and students
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a master’s degree in English or a related field of study
  • Experience with teaching English composition, professional writing tutoring or related experience
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work on-campus in Providence, R.I.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with online or nontraditional students
  • Experience working with students via email, phone, and web conferencing
  • Experience developing support resources for students
