Director of Athletics

Provides strategic direction and leadership for campus athletics. Promotes and implements programs to create a holistic approach to intercollegiate athletic competition, intramurals, recreation, fitness and wellness programs as part of the co-curricular student experience


Essential Job Functions

  • Develops and manages new and existing athletic programs in compliance with the athletic governing body and the university’s policies and procedures
  • Manages and maintains athletic facilities
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures within the university’s framework to provide administrative and operational effectiveness, fiscal responsibility, compliance, and efficient operations
  • Develops, implements and maintains strategic marketing plans for athletics that establish identity, pride, and tradition and entrenches athletics in the campus culture
  • Coordinates game day operations with department staff to provide a safe quality game day experience for athletes and fans
  • Manages and monitors university policies and procedures to maintain compliance with national association and conference rules and regulations in all areas including gender equity, athletic training standards and athletic communications
  • Serves as liaison to university alumni and resource development teams; manages athletics' alumni relations including engagement and fundraising strategies to build institutional affiliation
  • Administers the department’s revenue plan and collaborates with other university departments to raise funds for the athletic department
  • Collaborates with various other departments on campus to enhance the Johnson & Wales experience through quality athletic, club sport, intramural, fitness and recreation, and student programming opportunities building a community that promotes school spirit and affinity
  • Oversees campus intramural, recreation, club sport, fitness and wellness programming 
  • Communicates effectively with various internal and external audiences, including current and prospective student-athletes and their families
  • Prepares and monitors departmental budget
  • Supervises and develops the department staff, facilitating professional opportunities to improve individual capability and managing performance against job accountabilities, department goals and established university, campus and department policies and procedures
  • Supervises and manages student employees, as necessary, to enhance their academic and professional development
  • Performs other duties as assigned


 Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a master’s degree
  • Significant amount of experience working in athletic administration, sports management or in other related work


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or greater in athletics administration, sports management or a related field of study
